Philippine hog weekly: Farmgate hog prices up on Christmas week (week ended Dec 20, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Prices of Philippine farmgate hogs are up this week as buyers continue to rush to purchase pork and pork products.

Almost all provinces have registered gains while prices in some areas remained steady. This is unusual however, according to analysts as prices usually peaks at around PHP5 a kilo during this period.

Pork producers say prices may remain steady next week as consumers may have already sufficient supply for the rest of the holidays.

Market Analysis

Meanwhile, the devastation of tropical depression Sendong (international name Washi) is seen to cut agricultural exports, regional household consumption and inter-island trade in the fourth quarter and in early 2012, according to economists.

Sendong was said to be the deadliest typhoon that hit the country in 12 years and the world's devastating hurricane this year, leaving more than a thousand people dead and casualties reaching to more than a billion pesos. The cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in Northern Mindanao and Negros Oriental in Central Visayas were the worst hit.

The Department of Agriculture is still assessing the damages incurred in these provinces but they are certain that Sendong's impact will be greatly felt by the entire country in the early 2012. The hog industry fears that Sendong will be another huge setback as they still continue to battle with the onslaught of imported pork in the country.
