Russia's lifting of Polish meat ban looks hopeful

The European Commission expects to relaunch talks in the New Year over the ban on Polish meat products by Russia.

The move follows the agreement between Russia and EU over the future of EU meat exports to Russia this week.

The EU had earlier said that all countries should be treated the same way.

The current agreement for exports to Russia from the rest of the EU remains subject to finalisation by experts with a view to a Memorandum of Understanding being signed by January 18.

European Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said the meeting with Russia was a good opportunity for an exchange of views and that they had already started to work together on the Memorandum of Understanding.

Commissioner Kyprianou said they managed to resolve this issue as there were the same concerns, which is to reduce risks and maintain trade.
