Philippine Feed Weekly: Corn prices surge as Philippine feed prices soar anew (week ended Dec 8, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Philippine feed prices are up over the week as corn also peaks, fuelling theories that the grain pulled up costs of local feed ingredients.

Analysts believe that corn prices will continue to rise in the coming weeks due to alleged supply shortage. Livestock producers are worried over the increasing prices of coconut oil, fearing that it may again reach the PHP100 level which happened early this year.

The livestock and feed community expressed concerns over the upsurge in feed prices as they are still reeling from the onslaught of cheaper meat imports. Traders believe that prices may jack up in the coming weeks as other factors such as oil costs and power rates continue to rise.

Market Analysis

The local livestock industry expressed concern that the rising prices of feeds may greatly impact their business.

As pork and poultry producers struggle with increasing production costs brought about by mounting prices of oil and electricity, the escalating costs of feeds is definitely an added burden. This is the reason why stakeholders believe that the first quarter of 2012 will be extremely difficult.

The government on the other hand has vowed to implement measures to mitigate the problem. Livestock producers also called for a complete control of pork importation as they warned of a possible "disaster" in Philippine agribusiness which would adversely impact the national economy.
