Price competition cuts Swedish pork profits
Price competition has reduced Sweden's profitability for pork production, the chairman of Federation of Swedish Farmers (LRF) has said.
Lars-Göran Pettersson said that the high standard of animal care and environmental protection motivated a higher price, and hoped that the newly established certification system for good animal care would offer a competitive edge for Swedish meat producers.
The number of slaughtered pigs has dropped from four million in 1997 to three million, largely due to increased competition from cheaper pork from Denmark and Germany.
