Polish 2010 grain yield slides 8.5%

Poland's total grain harvest in 2010 fell 8.5% from last year to 27.3 million tonnes due to adverse weather, the statistics office said Friday (Dec 17).

The harvest results show rapeseed output fell 16.8% from 2009 to 2.1 million tonnes.

"The area sown to grains was less than 8.5 million hectares, lower than last year by 1.2%. Temperature and humidity conditions in late summer and early autumn 2009, which is the time for sowing winter grains for the 2010 harvest, varied, but generally were unfavourable due to insufficient soil humidity," reported the statistics office.

In its September harvest forecast, the statistics office saw total grain output in 2010 reaching 27.3 million tonnes, while rapeseed is at 2.1 million tonnes.
