Meriden Animal Health's Orego-Stim works as natural performance enhancer
Press release
Orego-Stim is a 100 percent natural, phytogenic feed additive containing essential oils extracted from a specific chemotype of Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum derived from a hybrid plant-breeding programme and grown commercially under strictly-controlled conditions, for specific use by Meriden Animal Health who hold this exclusive right.
The composition of the oil consists predominantly of a unique ratio and concentration of the phenolic compounds Carvacrol and Thymol, which are known to be powerful antimicrobial agents. Phenols kill organisms such as bacteria through its toxic effect on the cell wall, by denaturing and coagulating the proteins within the cell wall structure. The increase in permeability causes leakage of cellular constituents, resulting in water imbalance and cell death.
In contrast to AGPs, bacteria can never gain resistance to oregano oil as its inhibitory effect on bacteria is not through the transfer of chromosomes. The components in oregano oil are classified by the FDA as GRAS.
When incorporated into pig and poultry diets, oregano oil has been shown to improve palatability, feed intake, FCR and growth rates. Extensive in-vitro and in-vivo trials have shown that oregano oil assists in alleviating problems associated with the presence of gastrointestinal pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, Clostridium perfringens, Eimeria spp. and Lawsonia intracellularis.
