Vietnam to draft co-management guidelines for small-scale fisheries

Fishery industry players in Vietnam are currently holding a seminar in Hanoi to discuss insights and views in drafting national guidelines on co-management for small scale fisheries in Vietnam.

The seminar, which is held December 19 to 22, is jointly organised by the Fisheries Economic and Planning Institute and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC) under the chairmanship of Deputy Minister of Fisheries Luong Le Phuong.

Phuong stressed that the convention is an important step in outlining strategies to sustainable management of Vietnamese small scale fisheries as well as protecting the economy of its small fisherfoks in a liberalised trade.

During the seminar, the participants discussed the scope and specific characters of co-management, the role and functions of related parities, the fishing rights and allocation of water surface areas, building regulation for fisheries management and others.

The seminar discussions will be finalised into a national guiding document and will be submitted to the Ministry of Fisheries for approval.
