Private sector supports Europe's biggest experimental poultry centre

In June 2014 the Experimental Poultry Centre of Geel, Belgium opened its latest facilities, supported by latest technology from the private sector.

Both their farm workers and scientists are now supported by farm management software Lay-Insight and Broiler-Insight from Belgium's Porphyrio, and the Staalkat egg grading system from Denmark's Sanovo.

The partnership was driven by the Flemish Poultry Sector and the Province of Antwerp, resulting in new facilities for layers and broilers at the research centre. The centre houses 48 experimental groups of layers, and 32 groups of broilers.

Johan Zoons, Director of the Centre for Applied Poultry Research, said, "In our new facilities, we know everything about each chicken present and each egg laid. With this wealth of high quality research data, we want to be a leading party in European applied poultry research. The Porphyrio solutions are not only helping us with management of our data, they also support our farm workers in managing 80 groups of chickens."
