Methionine supply shortage fuels price hikes in China

Prices of methionine rose sharply during the week ending December 15.

China faced severe methionine supply shortages of late with several regions having little or no supply of some brands of products.

Liquid methionine* quotes in the general market rose to RMB20.50-21/kg.

As one new plant in China, with the capacity to produce 70,000 tonnes of methionine, is preparing for production, supplies are expected to increase substantially during Q1 2014. This will exert pressure on the market in the longer term.
