Philippine government allows imports of black tiger shrimps
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the Philippines has approved the importation of broodstock and post-larvae of Black Tiger shrimps (penaeus monodon) to improve the breed of local varieties.
In a newspaper advertisement on Thursday, the Fisheries bureau said black tiger shrimps exhibit "high productivity, profitability and low susceptibility to diseases."
In 2001, the agency banned the importation of the prawn variety to prevent the entry of aquatic diseases like the white spot syndrome virus, yellow head virus disease and the monodon baculo virus.
