Sierra Exportadora's overseas trout sales to hit US$12 million

Sierra Exportadora expects to conclude 2012 with overseas sales of trout reaching US$12 million.

The chief executive of the Sierra Exportadora, Alfonso Velasquez, linked this encouraging result with the promotional campaigns launched and the increased demand for the resource.

According to the executive, trout production increased by 30% over 2011, driven by the growth in consumer demand, reports the agency Andina.

At present, most of the trout shipments are directed to Canada and to Germany, but by 2014, the idea is to "strongly" launch the trout in several Asian markets.

Velasquez stressed that the market growth of this resource has a multiplying effect because it promotes higher productivity and partnership among entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, through the National Fisheries Development Fund (Fondepes) and the district municipality of Rapayán, in Ancash region, the Ministry of Production (Produce) held a workshop called 'Trout Breeding, Management and Feeding' with the aim of promoting local aquaculture, mainly cold-water fish.
