Malaysia eyes halal food ties with Pakistan

A group of Malaysian delegates is currently in Pakistan to establish prospects for forging strategic cooperation in the field of agriculture and veterinary services, in particular the halal food sector.

According to Pakistan High Commission commercial counsellor Wajihullah Kundi, the team is in Pakistan since December 7 to hold extensive meetings with their Pakistani counterparts; visit and ascertain the research facilities, and examine the halal infrastructure in Pakistan.

The objective is to establish linkages between the private and public sector organisations dealing with the halal food sector in both countries.

Interestingly, Kundi noted that the visit is congruent with the vision of the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation's (MATRADE) target to increase the bilateral trade between Pakistan and Malaysia from existing level of over US$1 billion to US$10 billion by 2015 as well as keeping with Pakistan's "Look East" policy.
