EU to aid Bulgarian fishery programme

The EU recently agreed to help Bulgaria's fishery and aquaculture programme through a finance deal that would support activities until 2013.

The decision has been signed by Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Commissioner Joe Borg, allowing Bulgaria to receive US$8.8 million on the operative programme.

The first monitoring committee on the programme is expected to be organised in January 2008.

Among the key projects are construction of new facilities and purchase of suitable equipment for fish breeding, hatchery management and fish rearing.

Provision is also being made for land-based aquaculture using artificial water pools.
