Private analytical firm Informa Economics on Friday pegged 2008 US corn plantings at 87.4 million acres, soy plantings at 70 million acres and winter wheat plantings at 48.7 million acres, traders said.

The firm's corn acreage estimate is down from the 93.6 million acres seeded by US farmers in 2007-08, according to the US Department of Agriculture. The soy acreage estimate is larger than the 63.7 million acres planted in 2007-08 and the winter wheat estimate is up from the 45 million acres planted last year.

In November, Informa estimated 2008-09 corn acres at 88.9 million, soy acres at 68.1 million and all-wheat at 64.1 million acres, traders said.
