New Zealand beef to South-east Asia and China region up 13 percent
New Zealand beef exports to South-East Asia/Chinas over the 11 months to November jumped 13 percent on the same period last year, to 48,145 tonnes swt, according to Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).
The rise was prompted by a record 35-percent increase to 21,150 tonnes from Indonesia, which accounted for almost half the exports.
The overall increase would have been greater if not for an 8-percent drop from Taiwan, which accounted for the other half. Exports were now at 18,831 tonnes.
Singapore and the Philippines both saw increases of more than 40 percent.
Consignments sent to Hong Kong continued to be strong, climbing 6 percent on 2006, to 2,438 tonnes swt.
US and Australian beef also see higher exports to the region.
US beef exports to South-East Asia and the China regions (Hong Kong, Taiwan) have grown substantially stronger than the period prior to the ban, particularly in the chilled trade.
Chilled US beef shipments to Taiwan surged 70 percent during the 10 months to September, to 7,889 tonnes swt. The US also exported 58 percent and 40 percent more beef to Singapore and Hong Kong, respectively, to 469 tonnes swt and 1,219 tonnes swt.
Australian trade to the region also grew, with shipments soaring 42 percent to reach the highest volume for the January to November period since 2003, at 66,717 tonnes swt.
Exports increased across individual countries with much of it in Taiwan and Indonesia.
