Thailand poultry industry keeps close eye on corn exports
An increase in corn exports from Thailand will affect the chicken industry, as production costs will be driven up by a shortage of the raw material.
Thailand has already exported 600,000 tonnes of corn during the first 10 months of this year, compared with 340,000 tonnes exported for the entire 2008. Exports for the whole of 2009 are estimated to exceed one million tonnes, as global demand escalates amid crop damages in the US.
Higher exports will force up domestic corn prices and chicken production costs, said Chaweewan Kampa, President of the Poultry Promotion Association of Thailand.
To avoid that situation, the government should look into the issue to prevent the outflow of too much corn supplies, said Chaweewan.
