Seafood processing plant to close in US state

A seafood processing plant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Icelandic USA, will close its doors after 38 years in operation.

Layoffs will begin in the first quarter of 2007 and continue as production is phased out through the end of the year.

The company says it can meet its business needs with its production facility in Newport News, Virginia.

A-third of all seafood plants in the state have closed in the last fifteen years, the Maryland Waterman's Association as they could not compete with foreign imports.

Icelandic is Cambridge's largest employer.
