Chicken Prices in Malaysia Remain Below Ceiling Limit Despite Increase
Prices of chicken in Malaysia were still under the ceiling price set by the government despite the price hike on Wednesday.
According to the Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations of Malaysia (FLFAM) broiler unit chairman Yap Kim Hwah, the 10-sen increase to RM3.60 per kg for live chicken at the farm was still below the RM4 ceiling. The 35-sen hike to RM5.50 per kg for dressed chicken with head, feet and innards intact was also below the RM6 limit.
Yap said the price hike was due to the monsoon season, which limited the supply of chicken and caused limited growth in terms of size, as well as larger demand following rising prices of fish.
The wholesale price of live chicken will go up by 30 sen to RM4.10 per kg while the retail price will increase from RM4.30 to RM4.60 per kg.
The wholesale price of dressed chicken will also increase by 30 sen to RM4.90 per kg.
The highest increase will be for dressed chicken without feet, head or innards, from RM5.75 to RM6.20 per kg.
