Thai Shrimp Weekly:  Shrimp prices bounce back as life in Bangkok returns to normal (week ended Dec 8)

Price summary

Thai shrimp prices bounced back in the local market but got dumped by processors and exporters, which are winding down production in the run-up to the coming yearend holidays.

In Mahachai, Thailand's main wholesale shrimp market, prices went up by THB3-7/kg after last week's plunge. The buying rates among members of the Thai Frozen Foods Association dropped by THB5/kg at the most.

Market analysis

Last week, shrimp prices, especially the smaller sized, plunged by as much as THB11/kg locally due to a surge in supply as Southern Thailand farmers advanced their harvests on fears of flooding.

Southern Thailand, where more than 70% of the country's shrimp supply comes from, has been hit by heavy rains during the last two weeks, resulting in heavy flooding in some areas. Flooding in Thailand's southern region about this time last year washed away 50,000-60,000 tonnes of shrimp that triggered a jump in prices nationwide.

However, with flood fears in Bangkok and other nearby provinces now over, thousands of residents who had sought refuge elsewhere, including other countries, at the height of the flooding in November have started to return, helping spike local shrimp demand.

Among processors and exporters, December is a low-production season since most orders for the Christmas and New Year holidays have already been shipped by this time. So, traditionally the buying prices of the Thai Frozen Foods Association, comprised largely by seafood processors and exporters, drop at this time when buying slows down as companies prepare for the weeklong New Year holidays.

In fact most Thai exporters had their deliveries for the Christmas and New Year overseas orders rushed last month for fear of being later on disrupted by the flooding.
