Paraguay exported more than US$1 billion worth of soy for the first time this year, according to local press reports on Thursday (December 13, 2007) citing an official release from the Treasury.

Paraguayan Treasury officials did not immediately respond to requests to provide the release.

The value of soy shipments increased 63.2 percent from the previous year, according to the reports. Increased production and soaring soy prices accounted for the gains.

Soy made up 35.7 percent of Paraguay's exports this year.

The bulk of Paraguay's soy are shipped down the Parana River to Argentina for processing or export.
