EU 07-08 grain area up 1 percent
European Union area seeded to grain will increase by 1 percent in 2007-08 to 50.6 million hectares in the current 25 member states, according to the monthly analytical report Strategie Grains Thursday (Dec 14).
With Romania and Bulgaria set to join the EU Jan 1, the report forecasts the total EU-27 grain area to rise 2 percent on-year to 57.1 million hectares.
In its first forecasts for the new year, Strategie Grains uses trend yields to forecast production.
With the help of the enlarged area, grain output in 2007-08 is forecast to rise 9 percent to 263.7 million tonnes in the current EU region and to 284.3 million tonnes for the EU-27.
The report warns that because winter crops are "very over-developed for this time of year" that they are at an increased threat to a sudden drop in temperature.
