EU 08-09 grain crop at 290.6 million tonnes, 14 percent increase on year

European Union 2008-09 cereal output is forecast at 290.6 million  tonnes, a 14 percent rise on the season, analytical report Strategie Grains said on Thursday (December 13, 2007).

Strategie Grains said the forecast is based on areas already sown this autumn, planting intentions for the spring and a return to trend-line yields.

EU soft wheat output is projected to jump 15 percent on the year to 129.3 million tonnes.

Strategie Grains forecast France, Germany and the UK would have the largest increases in wheat output, as the major producers would all be recovering from last season's weather woes.

Barley output was projected at 61.8 million tonnes in 2008-09, up 7 percent on the season. Corn production was forecast to rise 26 percent to 59.2 million tonnes.

Strategie Grains said Romania, Hungary, Italy and Bulgaria would have the biggest rise in corn output, as those areas recover from the yield-zapping 2007 heat wave and drought.

The following tables list Strategie Grain forecasts for 2008-09 production, yields and area.
