Korea Draft Livestock Industry Plan Up to 2013
The Korean government has presented the first draft of its plan for the Korean livestock industry to 2013, in a move to meet the World Trade Organization Doha development agenda. The key focus of the plan is increased commercialisation of the industry, upgrading of hygiene and safety standards, the improved effectiveness of animal epidemic prevention measures and the development of eco-friendly products.
The government will nurture companies operating in this way, promoting harmony between their companies, the animal and the environment.
The Korean government has plans to achieve its livestock goals by 2013, some of which include 85% of livestock to be produced by 20,000 specialist livestock producers, with the average producer income increasing from 87m won in 2002 to 108m won in 2013.
The government 's vision for Hanwoo sees 9,000 specialist producers raising 70% of all animals by 2013. The rate of conception is expected to be at 83%, with the average liveweight of adult cattle to reach 610kg. Grade 1 beef will also increase to 60% of all beef produced, resulting in an increase in income for specialised producers from 117m won in 2002 to 154m won in 2013.
The draft of measures sees the government placing emphasis on competitiveness, environment, safety, branding and product differentiation.
A focal point is the nurturing of specialised brands, as well as strengthening product grading and quality management. As well as production aspects, the government will look to increase consumption and demand for local product.
