Skandi-Seafoods launches cod plant in South Vietnam

Skandi-Seafoods Ltd. (SSL), an Asia-based joint venture between whitefish giants Ocean Trawlers and A. Espersen, has unveiled a new plant for cod and haddock processing in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City.

Increasing demand for cod and haddock products in the European and the US is behind the move to increase processing capacity, said Skandi Commercial Director Niclas Rydin.

He said the plant has been approved by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and is going to meet the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) system.

Most of the plant's materials are from the Barents Sea and supplied by Ocean Trawlers, the director added.

According to Rydin, SSL had a turnover of US$102 million for 2009 and the increased processing capacity could see this grow by 15% to 20% in 2010.
