Meat prices on a steady decline in Germany

Meat product prices in Germany prior to holidays are decreasing steadily with the sharpest decline observed in large local discounters Aldi, Lidl, Penny, Netto and Norma.

Aldi has lowered prices for 11 sausages types including high quality salami, liver sausages and cutlets up to six percent, while Penny reduced prices for more than 20 meat items.

Edeka and Rewe, the largest retailers in Germany, have also announced their intention to decrease prices for its own-label meat brands.

Rewe Group said current meat purchase prices in Germany are extremely favourable due to excessive pork supply, most of which is widely used in the production of sausages and salami.

Ralph Brockhouse, representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, said the competition between the discounters in the German meat products market remains tight compared to other EU countries.
