Brazil's 2009-10 corn estimate dips to 50.1 million tonnes

Brazil's 2009-10 total corn crop is expected to produce 50.1 million tonnes, the National Commodities Supply Corp., or Conab, said Tuesday (December 8).

Total production in the 2008-09 season was 51 million tonnes, the government agency said.

Brazil, which has two corn harvests per year, is expected to produce 32 million tonnes from the first corn harvest and 18.1 million tonnes from the second, Conab said.

This compared 2008-09's first harvest of 33.6 million tonnes and 17.3 million tonnes from the second harvest, Conab said.

The crop has seen a fall in production as farmers switched to plant more soy due to lower corn prices, according to Conab.
