Japan will inspect imported Vietnamese shrimp
Japan's Ministry of Trade said the government would carry out 30 periods of random inspections on Vietnamese shrimp from now until end-March next year.
Since October 1, 2005, Japanese authorities have already inspected imported Vietnamese shrimp twice, and discovered nitrofurans metabolite residues.
In response, Japanese authorities decided to start conducting random checks on Vietnamese shrimp. If the residue levels exceeded the allowed limit, the products would be disposed or returned to exporters.
As of May 29, 2006, Japan would officially adopt regulations on random inspections for food hygiene and safety.
