Peru's aquaculture product exports reached US$225.9 million in the first nine months of the year, or a 14% increase over the same period last year, the country's Association of Exporters (Adex) said.
Sales of shrimp and scallops accounted for 97% of the total revenue, Adex said.
The main item exported between January and September was 'shelled shrimp tails', whose shipments rose by 48.5% in value and by 34.7% in volume.
Adex service manager Marianella Hernandez said that shrimp exports amounted to US$131.7 million, or 40.4% more than in the first nine months of 2013. The main export markets were the United States, Spain, France and South Korea.
The main item exported between January and September was shelled shrimp tails, whose shipments rose by 48.5% in value and by 34.7% in volume.
Whole prawn lot recorded an increase of 12.3% in value and a reduction of 5.3% in volume.
Scallop export generated revenue of US$88.6 million, or 5.8% less than in the same period in 2013.
Adex attributed the decline in exported value to the lower production volume obtained in Piura and the delayed harvests in the south of the country, which will take place only early next year.
The main markets for Peruvian scallops were France and the US.
Adex emphasized the significant growth being experienced by Peruvian aquaculture exports in recent years: 65.7% in 2013, 24.5% in 2011 and 49% in 2010.
In 2012, a 23.2% decrease was recorded as a result of the drop in shipments of scallops (44.4%) and lower growth in shrimp deliveries (4.2%) abroad.
