Philippine hog weekly: Farmgate hog prices begin to slightly pick up (week ended Nov 28, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Prices of Philippine farmgate hogs rose slightly over the week, sparking hopes for farmers of improved prices until the holidays.

Although prices in most provinces have not moved, industry players were glad to see price gains in some areas.

They are hoping that prices would further increase beginning in December as demand is expected to swell for Christmas celebrations.

Market Analysis

Meanwhile, a shortfall in supply of pork is bound to happen in the first half of 2012 when demand is expected to accelerate.

While demand for pork is expected to drop by 3.7% in the first quarter of 2012, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) said demand is seen to rise by nearly 15% in the second quarter on-year. Supply side is predicted to decline by 3.39% in the first half.

The pork supply forecast did not take into account frozen inventory and the possible impact of interventions that both government and private sectors may implement to avert shortage. The BAI also noted that supply side may rise to 3.5% in the first half of 2012.

This development may prompt processors to import meat which could pose problem to pork farmers on possible massive importation as they are currently reeling from cheaper imports. However, pork farmers are hoping to intensify production so as not to resort to massive importation which could be really detrimental to the industry.
