Philippine Feed Weekly: Feed prices down as demand falters (week ended Nov 24, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

After recovering last week, Philippine feed prices dropped again due to slow demand.

Traders say purchases of feed have been weak in the past few days as livestock raisers are still battling the deluge of imports. In contrast, corn prices rose as the government declined earlier requests by livestock raisers to import 100,000 tonnes of the grain in anticipation of a shortage in the early months of 2012.

Observers say that they are still uncertain of the feeds' price movement in the coming weeks.

Market Analysis

Pork producers have blasted the government's forecast of supply shortage, and believe that purchase is getting weak.

They said smuggled pork imports are often misdeclared as offals, fats or skin and can enter the country with ease. They said that while permited pork import volume is limited to 54 million kilos under the Minimum Access Volume, import data showed that a total of 120 million kilos of pork was actually imported.

This dilemma has also affected feed producers as demand begins to falter despite the holidays and the first quarter production grind.

The government has promised to investigate the matter and pork producers have vowed to intensify their production and create their own brand as well as establish their own meat shops to avert shutdown of their operations.
