Prawn breeding site in Malaysia yields 50,000 tonnes in four months

A tiger prawn project in Air Hitam, a city in Malaysia's northern state of Alor Star, has yielded up to 50,400 tonnes of prawns over the last four months.

In early August, Kedah Agro Industries Bhd (Kedah Agro), under a 10-year contract, took over 76 of the ponds on a 405-hectare site which contained 226 ponds, according to  Malaysia's New Straits Times.

Of the 76 ponds, 40 were used for breeding tiger prawns while the rest were used to breed vanamei, according to Kedah Agro's business development manager, Wan Afif Wan Mohamed Aqble.

Each pond, covering 0.8ha, could produce up to seven tonnes of prawns daily and are sold domestically.

Usaha Fadzilah (M) Sdn Bhd is providing advice and technical support to the company.
