India's December 1 wheat stocks at 8.35 million tonnes
India's wheat stocks in state-run granaries totaled 8.35 million tonnes as of December 1, up 49.37 percent from 5.59 million tonnes a year-earlier, government data showed on Thursday (December 6, 2007).
The government's wheat stocks are an indicator of the amount of imports it needs in any crop year.
The data also showed that government rice stocks totaled 10.05 million tonnes, down from 12.05 million tonnes a year-earlier.
"The rice stocks are slightly down as procurement by state agencies is down this year," a senior government official said.
Total foodgrains stocks are estimated around 18.41 million tonnes, up 4.01 percent from a year earlier, data showed.
