Malaysia finds illegal feed additives in 17 hog farms

Of the 156 hog farms tested by the Malaysia Veterinary Bureau 17 of them were still using clenbuterol despite repeated calls from authorities to stop using the hormones.

The affected hog farms have been banned from moving their hogs while awaiting further testing. The affected farms may be ordered to cease operations for one month, pending further results.

According to local media, Ma Xiuqiang, vice minister of Agriculture and Agric-based Industries said the department is sending its officers to inspect hog farms nationwide, taking 10 samples from each farm. Inspections are expected to be concluded by Christmas.

Director of Poultry Association Zhang Hongcai expressed his disappointment in the clenbuterol issue and said illegal farms would pay for their activities.
