China's 2007 corn output seen to increase 2.1 percent
The China National Grain and Oil Information Centre said Wednesday that the country's 2007 corn production would probably rise 2.1 percent to 145 million tonnes nes.
Corn growers are expected to see good economic returns next year, as seen in the recent increases in prices, and this is boosting China's corn production outlook, the government-backed think-tank said.
Corn acreage would expand to 27.35 million hectares in 2007 from 27.05 million hectares this year as some farmers switch to corn from soybeans, it said.
The CNGOIC maintained its estimate for 2006 corn output at 142 million tonnes nes.
It did not adjust its forecasts for other grains.
Wheat output would probably drop 3.4 percent to 99.5 million tonnes nes in 2007, pressured by a decline in acreage and unfavorable weather conditions.
The acreage of soybeans would see a 2.2 percent decline next year. But output will still rise moderately to 15.6 million tonnes nes from 15.5 million tonnes nes in 2006, the CNGOIC said.
China's rapeseed production will reach 12.7 million tonnes nes next year, up 4.1 percent , thanks to an increase in acreage.
The following are the CNGOIC's estimates in December of the output and acreage of major crops in 2006 and 2007.
