Indonesia to be corn-sufficient by 2006

Indonesia's corn production has continued to increase this year and self-sufficiency in this crop is likely to be attained by end-2006, said the country's Corn Council chairman Fadel Muhammad, attributing to the use of good seeds for the better productivity.

This new target is earlier than the previous aim of 2007.

The country's corn production rose to 11.23 million tonnes in 2004, from 9.65 million tonnes in 2002.

This year, production is expected to reach 12.01 million tonnes, more than the national consumption of 11.5 million tonnes.
