In the 3rd quarter of 2004, prices of slaughtered chicken (western packaged) in China have increased by 8.93% from the second quarter's level, to RMB 10.86 /kg, up year-on-year by 16.99%. At RMB 19.66 /kg, China's average price of live chicken in the 3rd quarter registered a year-on-year rise of more than 10% in its twenty-eight provinces, and an average increase of 10.27% was seen in most parts of the country compared to the 2nd quarter of 2004. 

 

China exported US$428 million and imported US$135 million worth of poultry products during the first three quarters of 2004, down by 27.06% and 59.21% respectively compared with the same period in 2003.  The accumulated net value of China's exports of poultry products for the period was US$293 million. 

 

China's imports of poultry meat and entrails during the first three quarters of 2004 totaled 153,300 tons, or US$127 million, down year-on-year by 66.34% and 60.52% respectively.  A total of 85,100 tons, or US$105 million worth of poultry meat and entrails were exported from China during the same period, accounting for 24.47% of the total worth of China's exports of poultry products, a fall of 50.55% versus the same period in 2003.

 

China's exports of processed poultry during the first three quarters of this year totaled 91,200 tons, or US$300 million, down year-on-year by 17.84% and 7.63% respectively. Its processed poultry were mainly exported to Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea, which together, accounted for US$292 million, or 97.51% of the total worth of China's processed poultry exports.
