US positive about growth in pork exports to Japan

According to US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) president and CEO Philip Seng, the federation remains optimistic about the prospects for further growth in pork exports, particularly to Japan, in 2010.

Seng says USMEF continues to find promising new marketing opportunities for US pork in Japan's retail and foodservice sectors.

He also adds that Japan's recent increase in domestic pork production has not slowed demand for US pork, and that this upswing in Japan's production is not likely to be sustainable over the long term.

US pork exports to Japan first broke the US$1 billion mark in 2005, and surpassed US$1.5 billion for the first time last year.

Through the first three quarters of 2009, pork exports to Japan have continued this remarkable run by increasing another 3 percent over the record pace of 2008.
