Spain detects Newcastle disease outbreak in poultry farm

The agriculture authorities in Spain have reported an outbreak of Newcastle disease in 2,075 birds in Zumaia, Pais Vasco.

A total of 1,700 birds have reportedly died. From the 11,000 susceptible birds, 7,225 were destroyed.

Apart from stamping out, disinfection measures, control of wildlife reservoirs, movement control and zoning measures are carried out.

Since December 1993, Newcastle disease had not appeared in Spain.

Newcastle disease is a highly-contagious zoonotic bird disease affecting many domestic and wild avian species.

Its effects are most notable in domestic poultry due to their high susceptibility and the potential for severe impacts of an epidemic on the poultry industries.
