Lithuanian dairy exporters step into Indian market

Major Lithuanian dairy companies, such as Rokiskio Suris, are launching the exports of dairy products to India.

Pieno Zvaigzdes, another big dairy company, intends to do the same in the nearest time.

"There was no crisis, domestic consumption is growing fast, hence the trading between the EU and India is booming," said Petras Simeliunas, Lithuania's ambassador to India.

Lithuania's exports to India totalled LTL1 billion (EUR289 million; US$379.05 million) in 2008 yet declined by almost a half in 2009 due to a drop in the exports of fertilisers by Lithuania's Lifosa.

Tata, India's one of the most renowned companies, has built a fertiliser plant equipped with installations purchased in the US. The same installations have been erected by Lithuania's Arvi. Hence, the Americans entrusted the Lithuanian fertiliser producer with launching the process at the Indian facility.

According to Ambassador Simeliunas, Arvi and Tata have worked out joint plans for the future.
