The outbreak of avian flu early this year had dealt a heavy blow to poultry production in China in the first quarter. With the effective control of the avian flu outbreak and the government's supportive policies, the production and prices of poultry in China have gradually resumed to pre-avian flu outbreak levels, with egg prices soaring rapidly in the third quarter. Buoyed by good profit margins, the poultry industry is now on the track to recovery growth.
In January-September 2004, China exported 1.119 billion eggs, a fall of 1.88% compared to the same period in 2003; export revenue rose by 53.94% to US$50.6518 million. During the same period, China imported very little quantity of eggs, which constituted only processed eggs and the corresponding expenditure was negligible.
In the first three quarters of 2004, China's processed egg exports (including preserved and salted eggs) rose by 13.58%, compared to the same period a year ago, to 238 million, which accounted for 21.3% of the total egg exports.
In the third quarter of 2004, China's egg retail prices averaged RMB6.91 per kg, up by 30.19% compared to the same period 2003, and rose by 12.66% compared to the second quarter in 2004. Egg retail prices in China averaged RMB7.42 per kg in September, the highest since 2002.
