Serbia experiences Classical Swine Fever outbreak

An outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) has been reported in Serbia whereby 155 pigs died in this outbreak.

The outbreak was noted on November 17, in a breeding herd in the village of Veliki Radinci in Vojvodina, near the borders with both Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. The virus was confirmed on November 19, after laboratory tests.

The outbreak was reported to the International Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on November 20, by Dr. Zoran Micovic, from the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management in Belgrade.

Almost 8,200 pigs were kept at the farm, of which 201 were found to be suffering from CSF which has a mortality rate of 2.45%.

The breeding pig farm was quarantined and the pigs will be culled in the next few days, the OIE report said. Epidemiological investigation is ongoing in order to determine the origin of infection.

The last outbreak of CSF in Serbia dated back from October 2007.
