Peru's August fish exports up 13.5% on-year
Peru's fish exports generated US$412.7 million in revenue last August, 13.5% higher compared to the same month of 2012, when its value was US$363.4 million.
The exported volume also increased by 10.2%, changing from 215,600 tonnes to 237,700 tonnes, the Ministry of Production (Produce) informed.
This rise was mainly due to higher sales of fishmeal and frozen products, which grew 37.2% and 11.9%, respectively. As it is indicated in the latest Statistical Bulletin issued by Produce, between January and August 2013 the sale of 928,000 tonnes abroad generated US$1,814.8 million while in the same period last year 1,662,000 tonnes were exported for US$2,524 million.
In August 2013 a total of 173,100 tonnes of fishmeal was exported, 37.2% more than in the same month last year, when 126,100 tonnes were sent abroad. With regard to value, in the eighth month of this year fishmeal was exported for US$268.7 million, 41.7% more than in August 2012 (US$189.5 million).
Between January and August 2013 a total of 532.600 tonnes of fishmeal was exported, 50.9% less than in the same period in 2012 (1,084,800 tonnes).
The main markets for Peruvian fishmeal were China (337,878 tonnes), Germany (65,795 tonnes), Japan (33,377 tonnes) and Chile (27,961 tonnes), among others. August exports increased sales of fishmeal abroad in the first eight months up to a total of US$905.7 million, 34.8% less than in the same period of 2012 (US$1,388.7 million).
Taking into account the first eight months of 2013, a total of 66,900 tonnes of oil was sold abroad, 71% less than in the same period last year (230,300 tonnes). Denmark, Belgium, Chile and China absorbed 26,145 tonnes, 19,761 tonnes, 5,669 tonnes and 2,476 tonnes, respectively, of fish oil registered until last August. These sales generated US$168.3 million, an amount which represents a decrease of 52.8% compared to the same period in 2012 (US$356.6 million).
Some 32,700 tonnes of frozen products were exported in August 2013, a volume that accounts for a rise of 11.9 per cent compared to 29,200 tonnes exported a year earlier.
In January-August of this year, 250,500 tonnes of frozen products were sold abroad, 2.4% less than in the same period in 2012 (256,700 tonnes).
