EU agrees to lift import duties on grains for a year
European Union member states agreed in principle on Tuesday (November 27, 2007) to lift import duties on cereals for a year in reaction to soaring demand and prices, the bloc's Portuguese presidency said.
"There was unanimous approval for the proposal" to suspend import duties for the 2007/2008 marketing year, Portuguese Farm Minister Jaime Silva said after chairing a meeting with his European counterparts.
