Brazil's AgRural revises new soy crop down to 62.4 million tonnes
Brazil should harvest 62.4 million tonnes of soys in 2007-08, farm consultancy AgRural said on Tuesday (November 27, 2007), lowering its volume estimate from a previous call of 62.8 million tonnes.
AgRural agronomists cited problems in Mato Grosso state, the leading soy producer in Brazil. Soy growers there got a late start to the 2007-08 planting season because of dry weather in early October. As a result, farmers opted to plant cotton instead.
Other problems in the state included excess humidity, leading AgRural to reduce Mato Grosso's soy planted area this month by 2.3 percent to 5.6 million hectares.
Brazil is the No. 2 soy producer behind the US.
