Feed Business Worldwide: December 2012

Contradictions multiplied by opportunity

Imagine a feed and livestock market as potentially large as China, but growing much faster. India fits the description but is keynoted by unique, and even odd characteristics. It produces more livestock than any other country, but they perform poorly compared to their counterparts in developing countries, let alone advanced nations. With Asia's lowest meat consumption, it has the greatest potential for growth in a vegetarian majority society.

Most of all, with personal incomes growing by more than 5% per annum, India's protein intake is on course to double or even triple -but the feed inputs for over a billion people must be supplied from a land area comparable to that of Argentina, which contains only 40 million people.
