Romania's Jan-Oct livestock, live fowls exports up 25%

During January-October 2012, Romania's exports of livestock and live fowls reached over EUR176 million (US$228 million), up 25% from the same period of 2011's EUR140.91 million (US$183 million).

According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR), in the first 10 months of 2012, Romania traded 76,415 tonnes of livestock and live fowls on the internal European market and external markets, particularly cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, hens, geese and ducks, up 24% from 61,688 tonnes in the first 10 months of 2011.

Cattle exports exceeded 38,065 tonnes, for a value of EUR90.63 million (US$118 million), in the first 10 months of 2010, while sheep and goat exports stood at 28,892 tonnes worth EUR75.59 million (US$98 million).

According to MADR, external markets were also supplied with live Romanian horses, donkeys, mules and domestic breeds to the tune of 175.2 tonnes worth EUR196,362 (US$255,000), as well as with live hens, ducks, geese, turkeys and guinea fowls worth over EUR8.97 million (US$11.6 million) for 9,146 tonnes.

Romania traded live hogs only outside the EU, to the tune of 112.1 tonnes worth EUR320,863 (US$416,500), because of an on-going ban on such exports inside the EU.

Romania's imports of livestock and live fowls also advanced, from 21,469 tonnes in late August 2011, to 29,674 tonnes in the first eight months of 2012. Their value was nearly 38% higher, at EUR80.76 million (US$105 million).

The most significant exports were hogs - nearly 23,803 tonnes worth EUR49.86 million (US$65 million), along with live hens, geese, ducks and guinea fowls - 3,432 tonnes worth EUR23.7 million (US$31 million).
