Brazil's Jan-Oct poultry exports down 2.1% on-year

Brazil's exports of domestic poultry dropped 2.1% of the total volume shipped between January and October 2013 compared to the same period in 2012 with 3.374 million tonnes.

This is according to the Brazilian Poultry Union (UBABEF) who also reported that revenues from exports grew 4.2% during January to September 2013, with a value of US$7.1 billion.

According to the CEO of UBABEF, Francisco Turra, virtually all segments recorded lower volumes except for chicken and genetic material, which guarantee positive and balanced results in added revenue of the national poultry industry.

"The slight recovery in the pace of shipments of chickens in the second half is remarkable, which favoured the reduction of the negative balance of exports in the first half, which was almost 5%. This indicates a less bumpy year beginning in 2014. In other segments, such as eggs, sales to the domestic market are more attractive, which have impacted exports," said Turra.

In October, Brazilian exports of chicken meat reached 355,400 tonnes, a record result for the month and 3.5% higher compared to the same period in 2012. Revenues fell by 5.1% to US$681 million.

For the full year, shipments of poultry meat totalled 3.22 million tonnes, 1.4% less in income compared to the first 10 months of last year. In revenue, an increase of 5.3% to US$6.6 billion was recorded.

Also between January and October this year, shipments of eggs (in natura and egg products) totalled 9,829 tonnes, a result reflecting a 54.8 % drop compared to the same period in 2012.

Exports of turkey totalled 136,100 tonnes between January and October 2013, 6% lower compared to the same period last year. Revenues also decreased by 4.3%, totalling US$388.5 million.
