Indonesian Shrimp Exports Surge 75% from Jan - Aug

Indonesia's shrimp exports jumped 75 per cent to 26,679 tons in the first eight months of this year, compared with 15,253 tons in the same period last year.

The exports in the eight-month period surpassed the country's exports of 21,209 tons in the whole of 2003, according to the association of shrimp feed producers.

Association leader Johannes Kitono stated that the sharp increase has caused the United States to suspect that the country has imported shrimp from China and Thailand to be re-exported.

The United States has imposed anti-dumping import duty on shrimp from a number of major shrimp producing countries, including China and Thailand.

The United States has warned Indonesia against re-exporting shrimp from the two countries, Kitono added.
