EFSA approves Bactocell to be used in layers
Lallemand Animal Nutrition announced that its probiotic bacteria Bactocell has obtained a good scientific feedback for use as a zootechnical feed additive in layers.
Bactocell is already approved in Europe for use in broilers, piglets, fattening pigs, and aquaculture.
In its scientific opinion, FEEDAP, the panel on additives and products or substances used in animal feed of the European Food Safety Authority, acknowledged the safety and efficacy of Bactocell to significantly enhance laying hens' performance, based on three zootechnical trials.
The numerous independent trials conducted with Bactocell on layers indicate its benefits on egg production. Some of the advantages include increased laying rate by 2%, increased exported egg mass by 4%, increased egg mass without increased feed consumption, and increased shell resistance.
These benefits on egg quality are shown in the 50% decrease of the number of downgraded eggs (less broken eggs).
