Brazil might see lower 2005 grain output

Brazil's 2005 grain output is expected to fall by about 5.5 percent from 2004, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Output of cereals, leguminous and oleaginous plants (cotton seeds, peanuts, rice, beans, castor beans, corn, soy, and wheat) is expected to reach 112.743 million tonnes in 2005, down from 119.294 million tonnes in 2004.

IBGE reported that wheat output had the poorest performance, falling 13 percent from 2004. The institute attributed the reduction to excessive rains in the southern Paran¨¢ state, which is the country's main wheat producer.
